Signs you have an external water leak
Sometimes it’s obvious that you have an external leak with a large flow of water running down the driveway or a sudden pool of water appearing in the garden. At other times it can be harder to notice, and you may even dismiss the signs as just a quirk of your property. However, if you’re water bill has increased and your use hasn’t, it’s likely something is amiss.
Some common signs of an external water leak:
- Persistent boggy patch of lawn, even during dry spells
- Constant damp patches on your driveway when there has been no rainfall
- Puddles forming in your garden with no obvious source
- Sunken areas or sinkholes appearing
You may also notice:
- Issues with your water pressure
- Dirt or air bubbles appearing in your water
- An increase in your water bill
Whose responsibility is an external water leak repair?
Your local water company is responsible for the water mains and any service pipes leading to the boundary of your Bristol area property, usually up to the water meter. Any leak that is outside the boundary of your property is their responsibility. The supply pipe that lies within your boundary is your responsibility. There are some exceptions to this, particularly when the supply pipe crosses other properties. If you are unsure, then it’s best to get in touch with your water supplier.
How to check if a water leak is on your property
If you have a water meter at your Bristol property, checking if the external leak is on your property is fairly simple.
- Turn off all appliances that use water. That includes taps, the toilet system and any water tanks.
- Turn off the inside stop tap. Check the water is off by turning on a tap (don’t forget to turn it off again)
- Take a meter reading and note it down.
- Wait 15 minutes and then take another meter reading. If the dial has moved, then you have a water leak between the water meter and your stop tap.
If the external water leak is on your property, then it’s time to call us in. If the water leak is outside your boundary, then it is the responsibility of the local water company.
